Love this! It's so easy to go the sweet/candy route with Halloween bashes, but we really need some savory options that aren't too fussy. I usually make mummy dogs (veggie dogs wrapped in dough to look like mummies), deviled eggs and some kind of sweet. This is the first year my kiddo isn't into trick or treating though so I gotta up my game. He's too old/cool to go trick or treating, but deep down I know he'd be thrilled if we did something special for dinner.
When my kids were little, I started making "spider goulash" for Halloween. The name is a reference to an old Bugs Bunny cartoon with a mad scientist who promised his monster "a nice spider goulash" as a reward for doing his bidding. My version is a pumpkin curry with chickpeas (black beans would ruin the color) and coconut milk, garnished with Chinese black fungus (which comes dried in thin strips) reconstituted in boiling water or broth. (Hijiki works, too.) This year I plan to serve it with black rice. Maybe add some raisins, idk.
I love, love, LOVE Halloween. Every year I wait for Halloween Oreos (I know, I know, but it's only once a year), and I had the best costumes growing up thanks to my mom working her way through college as a costumer. One year my brother was a dinosaur and I was a mermaid, but people thought I was a fish. The costume was so lovely and intricate, and the tail was filled with foam and wires to keep it up.
My daughter, at 7, insisted on being a chupacabra. I made her a marvelous costume with bat-like wings. No one knew what she was and she was so mad! The next year she HAD to be the Egyptian goddess Bastet, and again we made an awesome costume and no one understood outside our immediate household. We should have just moved.
Lololol, you should have moved. That neighborhood did deserve your creativity.
When I was really young, I wanted to be a bat for Halloween. My mom made a cute costume with great bat wings that hung from my arms. It looked so cool. Everyone kept calling me Bat Girl and I was pissed. I was a bat!!!!!! Ugh these people
You and your daughter both sound amazing. To know what a chupacabra was, and decide to be one for Halloween at 7 is so beyond impressive. I bet you are both fascinating people.
I would have been so mad that people thought I was a fish!!!! Your costume sounds so cute. One year I was Tinkerbell and my brother was Peter Pan when I was 5 or 6. Sounds cute right? Wrong. I’m 2 years older and was SIGNIFICANTLY bigger than him so everywhere we went adults started laughing and I didn’t understand lol. All I wanted were compliments on my cute wings damnit!
I'm literally writing about the same thing right now. Halloween treats used to be nuts and dried fruits, but urban legends of people tampering with the food led to wrapped trash candy. I came up with a pomegranate "Vampire Punch" that has no added sugar. I'll be posting it in a few weeks.

Right?! Who wouldn’t be?
For us, pumpkin pie season starts on Halloween
At our house, there IS no pumpkin pie season; it’s a year-round love affair!
You’ve cracked the code on the good life I see 🎃
This is a very good move

That’s so cute! And it’s actually tasty. This is perfect Halloween food.
