... and after years of buying your cookbooks and reading your awesome blog posts, this post did it. I'm now also a paid subscriber... and proud pothead :) Thanks, Michelle, for being such an awesome cook and human being (not necessarily in that order). Love what you do and that you combine people (and yes, whales are indeed people too) and planet so beautifully in your posts and recipes. Also love everyone in this community. Rock on, potheads!

As a very privileged Atlantic Canadian (who has been lucky enough to go to Cuba a few times, but sadly has never been whale-watching at home) - ALL OF THIS.

The sad folk at the all-inclusives who don't seem to get the destruction of the local community as well as the environment; the whales, who are just trying to do their thing in their own way; how does one educate others about this?

...my very first school project was on the humpback and their songs.

Yeah I think a lot of the world’s problems would go away if people could learn to live life rather than just be scared of it. Go out, meet some people, poke around; life could be so nice.

Whales are amazing. Of course you did your first school project on them, you’ve got great taste.

My neighbor was within feet of a gray whale recently in the Sea of Cortez. Those whales make a pit stop of up to a month or more around my home of Whidbey Island to enjoy the all-you-can-eat ghost shrimp buffet. Another friend was swimming and heard a sound. He looked up to see a gray whale twenty feet from him.

https://granta.com/on-mistaking-whales-bathsheba-demuth/ is a wonderful article on gray whales. Bathsheba's book https://bookshop.org/p/books/floating-coast-an-environmental-history-of-the-bering-strait-bathsheba-demuth/11198036?aid=99230&ean=9780393358322&listref=non-fiction-mostly-water& is equally good.

Thank you so much for the links! I’m definitely going to check out that book. I visited Whidbey Island years ago and it’s such a beautiful place. You are so lucky to live there and the whales are lucky to visit ❤️

Love whales! The whale watching is prime up here in northern California. Also I'm very excited because this summer my sister and I are doing a trip to Mexico.

I knew there had to be other whale lovers here. How could we not be obsessed?! They’ve got language, culture, and are like visitors from another planet! What’s not to love?

Super rad that you got to see it in Baja! We’re currently on a road trip on Vancouver Island,BC and we took a boat ride 90 min to these kick ass hot springs. On the way there, our boat captain stopped and she yells out-“Over there! It’s a Gray Whale!” Super cool to see it so close and it was also on the smaller side. Nature is incredible and I’m all for granting “personhood” to animals.

I think it’s such an interesting concept for their protection. I’m really interested in seeing how this wild rice case turns out

Thanks for this. I always love when you talk about saving the planet and its inhabitants. As for saving the kitchen, I am deep in the weeds of a move (hopefully the last for a long time), and as I boxed up your cookbooks, I made sure I wrote what was in there so I could open them first as I unpack!

Thanks for being you and being willing to share yourself with all of us.

I love whales. 🐳 as a native new Englander, all I wanted as a kid was to go on a whale watch but my parents never wanted to. As an adult, I’ve been on several whale watching trips in cape Cod. On one trip, we saw over 60 individual whales, including a mom and baby. When I saw the calf I almost dropped my camera in the water. I’m glad you got to experience it! ❤️
